I really appreciate your sharing here. And I wanted to echo your thoughts about the systems part of having students own their own learning. I have done a lot of work on this with adolescents and the context really matters. If they have had related experiences (project-based learning, collaborative learning, etc.), the transition is less difficult for them. However, if they have had primarily teacher-centered learning, particularly with uninspired instruction, then they need scaffolding to learn how to learn in a self-directed way.
